Details

Spent Mushroom Compost is well-rotted farmyard manure (horse and chicken muck with straw) that has already served a term growing mushrooms. Rich in organic matter and easy to work with, it's a favourite for no-dig gardens — improving drainage in clay, holding moisture in sandy soils and feeding plants with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

FAQs

How much will I need?

Multiply the length and width of your area by the depth you want, in metres, to get cubic metres. One cubic metre is 1,000 litres — enough to cover about 20m² at 50mm (a typical mulch layer) or 10m² at 100mm (for new beds and lawns). Bulk bags of topsoil are sold by weight and hold roughly a cubic metre per tonne, though this varies with moisture.

When is the best time to use it?

Mulches and soil improvers can go down any time the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged — autumn and spring are ideal. Water dry borders well before mulching. Topsoil for new lawns and beds is best laid when the soil is workable, not soaking wet.

Which bag size should I choose?

Bulk bags are the most economical way to buy for larger beds, lawns and borders. Smaller handy bags are ideal for pots, containers and top-ups, or where access is tight and the bags need carrying through the house or over a wall.
