Details

There's a particular kind of evening a fire pit makes possible — the one where nobody wants to go inside. This Corten steel fire pit is built for exactly that. Forged from weathering steel that develops its own living rust patina, it arrives already pre-rusted, so there's no waiting and no painting — just a warm, honest centrepiece that looks better every season it spends outdoors. Corten is the same material specified for outdoor sculpture and architecture, chosen because its surface rust forms a stable, protective layer that shields the steel beneath rather than eating into it.

FAQs

Will it keep rusting until it falls apart?

No — that's the clever part. Corten is designed so its surface rust forms a stable, protective layer that slows further corrosion rather than accelerating it. It's the same steel used for outdoor sculpture and cladding precisely because it weathers beautifully and lasts. You may notice some rust runoff onto paving in the first few weeks as the patina settles, so we'd suggest placing it on gravel, grass, or a surface where a little staining won't matter.

Do I need to cover it or bring it in over winter?

You don't. The whole appeal of Corten is that it's happy to live outdoors year-round — rain and weather are what give it that rich patina. There's no need to store it away or treat it seasonally.

What size should I choose?

The 70cm suits patios, courtyards, and smaller gatherings where you want warmth without a huge footprint. The 90cm is the one for bigger fires and larger groups — more room for logs and a more commanding presence in the garden.

Can I cook on it?

It's primarily designed as a fire pit for warmth and ambiance rather than a barbecue, but many people happily use theirs for cooking over embers. Just let the wood burn down to a bed of hot coals first, and use appropriate grilling accessories.

Is it safe on decking?

We'd always recommend a heat-proof base or fire-pit mat under any fire pit on a timber deck, and keeping it clear of overhanging plants and structures. On stone, gravel, or grass it's more forgiving, though bear in mind the possible rust runoff on paving mentioned above.

Care & Maintenance

Corten (weathering steel) is designed to look after itself — the surface patina forms a stable, protective layer that slows further corrosion, so no painting, oiling, or sealing is needed. Leave it outdoors year-round; rain and weather deepen the finish over time. In the first few weeks the patina can shed a little rust runoff, so position it on gravel, grass, or a surface where light staining won't matter rather than pale paving. Empty ash after each use and, if you wish, tip out rainwater to keep the bowl clear. No covering or winter storage required.
