Care & Maintenance

This is a living White Willow (Salix) tree, not a manufactured product — it needs ongoing care rather than periodic maintenance, and it will change year on year as it grows.

On arrival

Unpack the plant promptly and water it thoroughly. If you cannot plant it straight away, keep it in its pot somewhere sheltered and bright, and do not allow the compost to dry out. Willow is thirsty even in a pot.

Planting

Plant in full sun, in moist or wet soil. Willow is unfussy about soil type but thrives on damp ground. Dig a hole roughly twice the width of the pot, plant at the same depth it sat in the pot, firm in well, and water generously. Keep it well watered through its first two growing seasons while the root system establishes.

Important: siting

Do not plant close to buildings, walls, drains, or septic systems. White Willow has an extensive, aggressive root system that absorbs water over a wide area and can cause structural problems. Allow generous distance — this is a tree with an eventual size of approximately 12m x 8m.

The braided stems

The braid is formed from living stems that will thicken and fuse together permanently as the tree grows. Do not remove any ties until the stems have visibly grown into one another. Check periodically that ties are not cutting into the bark as the trunk thickens, and loosen them if they are.

Pruning

Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove any shoots emerging below the braided section to keep the sculpted form clear. Willow responds vigorously to pruning, so do not be afraid to cut back hard to maintain shape.

Through the year

Willow is deciduous — green foliage in spring and summer, yellow in autumn, bare stems in winter. Bare winter stems are normal and not a sign of ill health. Fully hardy (H6), so no winter protection is needed once established.
