What to expect as it weathers

Your annual spring routine

Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely for at least 24 hours before applying any treatment. Apply a quality water-based exterior wood stain or timber preservative on a dry day with no rain forecast for 24 hours.

Through the season

Wipe down after heavy use or sustained wet periods. Check and tighten any fixings that have worked loose — a two-minute job that prevents larger problems. Avoid using a pressure washer directly on the surface at close range as this can damage the treatment and lift the grain.

Autumn

Repeat the spring clean before the coldest months arrive. Apply a final coat of stain if needed. If you use a cover, choose a breathable one — airtight plastic wrapping traps moisture and creates exactly the conditions you are trying to prevent.
