What to expect as it weathers

Your annual spring routine

Once a year — ideally March or April before the furniture sees heavy use — give it a thorough clean with warm soapy water and a stiff brush, working in the direction of the grain. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely for at least 24 hours before applying any treatment. Apply a quality water-based exterior wood stain or timber preservative on a dry day with no rain forecast for 24 hours.

Through the season

Wipe down after heavy use or sustained wet periods. Check and tighten any fixings that have worked loose — a two-minute job that prevents larger problems. Avoid using a pressure washer directly on the surface at close range as this can damage both the finish and the treatment beneath it.

Autumn

Repeat the spring clean before the coldest months arrive. Apply a final coat of stain if needed. If you use a cover, choose a breathable one — airtight plastic wrapping traps moisture and creates exactly the conditions you are trying to prevent.
